Lady Pirates make it to Championship Game

Coach Manley Takes 500th Win

The Pittsburg Lady Pirate varsity team helped head basketball coach Debra Manley clinch a milestone in her coaching career with their win over Commerce 49-48. The Lady Pirates would lift their team to 12 wins for the season with the victory and Coach Manley would reach her 500th win as a head basketball coach.

The Pirates would reach this milestone with the help of leading scorer Kiara Wright with 12 points and Miranda Miner with 10 points including two 3 pointers.

Other scorers in the victory against Commerce would be Capria Howell with 9 points, Synterreka White with 6, She’Cara Humphrey with 6 points, Shanequa Harris with 2, Hailey Clark with 2, and Katryna Watkins with 2 points.

With the win, Coach Manley takes a place in high school basketball history as the few and exemplary coaches to reach the 500th mark.

During the holiday break the Lady Pirates would travel to the Sherman Holiday Invitational to compete in a tough tournament for elite teams. The Lady Pirates would make their way to the championship game where they would lose to Whitesboro 51-49 in double overtime.

The Pirates would make their way to the championship undefeated by beating Van Alstyne 63-17 and Farmersville 47-32. The loss would come to a very tough team that is ranked 19th in the state.

The battle would be a close back and forth power house game in the final quarters of play. Finally, Whitesboro outscored Pittsburg 9-7 in the second extra period to pull out a 51-49 thriller at Bearcat Gymnasium, taking away the title trophy.

Whitesboro took an early 14-8 lead and maintained the upper hand for the first half, but the Lady Pirates crept closer in the second half, cutting the Lady Cats’ lead to 34-30 at the end of three.

Pittsburg was led by Kiara Wright with a game-high 25 points. She’Cara Humphrey’s drive and layup would’ve forced a third overtime, but was ruled to have been made after the buzzer, giving Whitesboro the win.

Two Lady Pirates also received the honor of being named to the Sherman Holiday Invitational All-Tournament Team. Juniors She'Cara Humphrey and Kiara Wright were both honored with the award.

Last Tuesday night the Lady Pirates also hosted the Pleasant Grove Hawks in district competition. The Lady Pirates would take the win over the Lady Hawks 69-49.

Humphrey for the Pirates would score the first eight points of the game as she would finish with 19 points against the Hawks.

The Hawks would tie up the game at 25 each with 5:08 left in the 2nd quarter. But coming out of the locker room at the half, the Lady Pirates would open up with a 6-0 run and not look back.

Wright would lead the Lady Pirates with a game high of 21 points, Clark with 9 points, Harris with 6 points, Watkins with 5, Charnequa Frazier with 4 points, Miner with 3, and White with 2 points.

The Lady Pirates will travel to Liberty-Eylau this Friday night to take on the Leopards from District 16-3A. The next home game for the Lady Pirates will be next Tuesday, January 27 against the Lady Tigers of Mount Vernon. The junior varsity will start at 5:00 with the varsity to follow.
